The Smokers' passion for boating led them to start their own business, with a focus on creating high-quality, durable boats that could withstand the rugged waters of Lake Worth. They named their company "Smoker Craft," and it quickly gained popularity among local boating enthusiasts. In 1970, they expanded their operations by acquiring land in White Settlement, Texas. White Settlement, Texas is a small suburban city located in Tarrant County, just west of Fort Worth. With a population of approximately 17,000 people, it may seem like your typical quiet and unassuming town. However, White Settlement has a rich history and unique character that sets it apart from other cities in the Lone Star State. The origins of White Settlement can be traced back to the mid-1800s when European settlers began moving into the area. The land was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes but was eventually acquired through treaties with the United States government. One such tribe was the Tonkawa Indians who were known for their nomadic lifestyle and hunting skills. In 1841, General Edward H. Tarrant led an expedition to explore and map out this part of Texas. During his journey, he discovered an area near what is now known as Lake Worth that had white limestone bluffs along its banks. He named this area "White Bluff" which eventually evolved into "White Settlement." The first permanent settlement in White Settlement was established by James Moseley in 1856. He built a log cabin on what is now Elm Street and became one of the first merchants in town selling goods to travelers passing through on their way to Fort Worth or beyond. In 1873, Colonel E.S.Burleson purchased most of the land surrounding White Bluff from Moseley's heirs for $7 per acre with plans to develop it into farms and ranches for new settlers moving into Texas after the Civil War. As more people moved into White Settlement over time, it continued to grow as a farming community due to its fertile soil and access to water sources such as Lake Worth and several creeks running through its borders. One significant event that put White Settlement on the map occurred during World War II when Camp Bowie opened nearby in Brownwood, Texas. This military training base brought an influx of soldiers and their families to the area, resulting in a population boom for White Settlement. The city's economy flourished with the building of new homes, businesses, and schools to accommodate the growing population. Today, White Settlement is known for its close-knit community and strong sense of pride in its history. The city has several historical landmarks that showcase its past, including the Log Cabin Village which preserves and interprets 19th-century pioneer life through authentic log cabins from around North Texas. In addition to its rich history, White Settlement also offers a variety of recreational activities for residents and visitors alike. Lake Worth is a popular spot for fishing, boating, and water sports while Marine Creek Lake Park provides opportunities for hiking and nature watching. There are also numerous parks throughout the city that offer playgrounds, picnic areas, sports fields, and walking trails. One unique feature of White Settlement is its annual Chicken Dinner Road Race held every April since 1981. This event honors the town's early days when chicken dinners were sold at local churches as a way to raise money. Today it includes various races such as a 5K run/walk and cycling events along with live music performances and food vendors. The city also takes great pride in supporting local businesses through initiatives like "Shop Small Saturday" where residents are encouraged to shop at small businesses within the community rather than big-box stores on Black Friday. White Settlement may be small compared to other cities in Texas but what it lacks in size it makes up for in character. Its rich history coupled with modern amenities make it an attractive place to call home or visit. As you walk down Main Street or attend one of their many festivals or events like Pioneer Days Celebration or Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting Ceremony you can't help but feel like you're part of something special – a tight-knit community that values tradition while embracing progress. Despite facing challenges over time such as natural disasters and economic downturns, White Settlement has remained resilient and continues to thrive. Its strong community spirit is evident in the numerous volunteer organizations, such as the Lions Club and Rotary Club, that work to better the city. Education is also highly valued in White Settlement with several public schools serving students from kindergarten through high school. The city also has a branch of Tarrant County College offering higher education opportunities for its residents. In recent years, White Settlement has undergone significant revitalization efforts to attract new businesses and improve its overall appearance. This includes the development of new retail centers, restaurants, and housing options. The city's location near major highways makes it easily accessible for commuters working in neighboring cities like Fort Worth or Dallas. One notable resident of White Settlement is actor Bill Paxton who grew up in the city before achieving fame in Hollywood. He often credited his small-town upbringing for shaping his values and work ethic. White Settlement may not be as well-known as other cities in Texas but it holds a special place in the hearts of those who call it home. Its history, sense of community, and dedication to progress make it an ideal place to live or visit. As we look towards its future growth and development, one thing remains certain – White Settlement will continue to hold onto its unique charm while adapting to change.

White Settlement, Texas is a small suburban city located in Tarrant County, just west of Fort Worth. With a population of approximately 17,000 people, it may seem like any other ordinary town in the Lone Star State. However, White Settlement has a rich history that dates back to the early 1800s. The area where White Settlement now stands was once inhabited by various indigenous tribes including the Caddo and Comanche. The land was part of Mexico until 1836 when Texas gained its independence. In the mid-1800s, white settlers began to move into the area and establish homesteads along the Trinity River. One of these settlers was Middleton Tate Johnson who arrived in 1845 and built his home on what is now known as White Settlement Road. He also established a ferry service across the Trinity River which helped boost trade and commerce in the area. His home became a popular stop for travelers heading west towards California during the Gold Rush. In 1856, James Witten Baker purchased land from Johnson's estate and laid out plans for a townsite which he named "White Settlement" due to its proximity to Native American settlements along with river banks being covered with white sandstone deposits giving off an eerie ghost-like effect at night. During this time period, White Settlement served as an important hub for cattle drives coming up from South Texas on their way to Kansas City or Chicago markets via Chisholm Trail through Fort Worth. In 1873, after much growth and development within White Settlement itself had taken place such as churches being constructed; businesses opening up; schools educating children - settlement leaders decided that it would be best if they incorporated themselves as an official entity separate from Tarrant County government so that they could have more control over local affairs without interference from outside forces trying to impose their own agendas upon them such as taxes or laws not favorable towards rural lifestyles common amongst residents living there. By the turn of the century, White Settlement had become a thriving community with a general store, post office, and several churches. In 1909, it officially became an incorporated city with its own government and leaders. The population continued to grow steadily in the early 1900s due to its convenient location near Fort Worth and its fertile land for farming. In the 1920s, White Settlement saw significant growth as oil was discovered nearby in Ranger, Texas. Many residents of White Settlement took advantage of this economic boom by working in the oil industry or investing in oil wells themselves. During World War II, White Settlement played a crucial role as it was home to Camp Bowie- one of the largest training camps for soldiers during that time period. This brought many new businesses and people into town which further fueled its growth. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, White Settlement experienced ups and downs like any other small town. It faced challenges such as urbanization from neighboring Fort Worth and declining property values. However, through strategic planning and community efforts, these issues were addressed effectively. Today, White Settlement continues to thrive as a close-knit community with strong ties to its rich history. Its downtown area has undergone revitalization efforts while still maintaining its small-town charm. The city also boasts numerous parks and recreational facilities for residents to enjoy. One notable landmark in White Settlement is Lake Como Park which was built in 1934 by President Franklin D Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). This park provides outdoor activities such as fishing and camping along with beautiful views of Lake Como- one of only two natural lakes within Tarrant County. White Settlement also holds annual events such as Pioneer Days Festival celebrating their pioneer heritage; Christmas parade; Fourth Of July celebration; National Night Out against crime awareness event amongst others throughout year helping foster sense pride among locals living there making them feel more connected not just each but shared past well. In conclusion, White Settlement may not be the most well-known city in Texas, but its history is deeply intertwined with the growth and development of the state. From its humble beginnings as a small settlement to becoming an incorporated city, White Settlement has overcome challenges and persevered to become a thriving community that values its past while looking towards a bright future.
White Settlement, Texas is a city located in Tarrant County, Texas. It was originally settled by Native American tribes such as the Caddo and Comanche before European explorers arrived in the 18th century. The area was claimed by Spain in the late 1700s, but it wasn't until after Mexico's independence from Spain that White Settlement began to be developed. The first known permanent settlement in what is now White Settlement was established around 1845 by a man named Charles Fatheree. He built a trading post near the Trinity River and soon other settlers began to arrive. The area became known as "Fatheree's Settlement" or "White's Fort," after another early settler named James A. White. In 1856, Tarrant County was officially formed and Fatheree donated land for a county seat. However, due to disagreements over where the courthouse should be located, he withdrew his donation and instead gave land for a townsite just west of his original settlement. This new townsite became known as "White Settlement." During this time period, many families moved into the area seeking cheap land for farming and ranching opportunities. By the late 1800s, White Settlement had grown significantly with churches, schools, general stores, blacksmith shops and other businesses being established. One major event that shaped White Settlement's history occurred during the Civil War when Confederate forces occupied nearby Fort Worth (then called Camp Worth). Union troops were sent out from Kansas City to capture Fort Worth and encountered resistance at White Settlement on October 16th ,1863 leading to what is now remembered as “The Battle of Stone Houses.” Though there were no casualties reported on either side during this skirmish between Kansas Jayhawkers led by Major-General James Blunt’s Fourth Division of Cavalry against Confederates under Colonel William Quantrill’s command; accounts vary widely concerning its outcome according to both Union and Confederate sources. After the Civil War, White Settlement continued to grow as a farming community. In 1876, the Texas and Pacific Railway was built through the area, providing transportation for agricultural goods and bringing in new residents. The railroad also brought with it businesses such as a cotton gin and lumberyard. In 1900, White Settlement was officially incorporated as a town with a population of around 500 people. By this time, it had become an important hub for agriculture in Tarrant County. However, the city's growth was stunted by two major events – World War I and the Great Depression. During World War I, many young men from White Settlement went off to fight in Europe which caused a decline in population and economic activity. Then during the Great Depression of the 1930s, farmers were hit hard by droughts and market crashes leading to further economic struggles for the city. It wasn't until after World War II that White Settlement began to experience significant growth again with returning soldiers looking for places to settle down. In addition, industries such as aviation began moving into nearby Fort Worth creating job opportunities for residents of White Settlement. Today, White Settlement is a thriving suburban community known for its friendly small-town atmosphere combined with easy access to urban amenities in neighboring cities like Fort Worth. Its rich history can still be seen throughout the city with historic buildings such as City Hall (built-in 1925), Old Saint Peter’s Church (built-in 1884), or Fatheree Schoolhouse (built-in late-1800s) being preserved as landmarks. The city continues to honor its past through annual events such as "White Buffalo Days," celebrating its early settlers who raised buffalo herds on their land; "Festival of Lights," where thousands gather each year at Christmas time; or "Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Parade" held every Independence Day featuring antique cars and floats. Today, White Settlement is a diverse and growing community with a population of over 16,000 residents. Its rich history has shaped the city into what it is today – a friendly and welcoming place to call home.
