Mercury Marine is a global leader in the marine industry, providing world-class outboard motors and boats for recreational boating and commercial applications. The company has a rich history dating back to 1939 when it was founded by Carl Kiekhaefer in Wisconsin. However, one of its lesser-known chapters takes place in Crowley, Texas. In the late 1960s, Mercury Marine began looking for new locations to expand their production facilities due to increasing demand for their products. After an extensive search process, they decided on Crowley as the ideal location for their new plant. With its central location and access to major waterways such as the Mississippi River and Gulf of Mexico, Crowley provided easy transportation routes for both raw materials and finished products. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in October 1971 with Governor Preston Smith attending as a special guest. The construction of the facility was completed within record time – just nine months – thanks to dedicated teams working around-the-clock shifts. The first outboard motor rolled off the assembly line at the Crowley plant on June 30th, 1972. This marked a significant milestone not only for Mercury Marine but also for Crowley itself as it became home to one of the largest manufacturing plants in North Texas at that time. The initial workforce consisted of approximately 300 employees who were trained extensively by experienced personnel from other Mercury plants across the country. This ensured that quality standards were met right from day one. As production ramped up over time, so did employment opportunities at Mercury Marine's Crowley plant. By early 1980s, there were over 1,500 employees working at this state-of-the-art facility which had expanded significantly since its inception. One unique aspect about Mercury Marine's operations in Crowley was its commitment towards sustainability long before it became mainstream thinking. In fact, even during those early days when environmental regulations were not yet stringent or enforced strictly enough like today; mercury marine was already implementing eco-friendly practices in their production processes. The company also showed great care for its employees, providing them with a safe and healthy work environment. In 1978, Mercury Marine's Crowley plant received the Texas Governor's Award for Safety Excellence, recognizing their outstanding commitment to workplace safety. As the demand for outboard motors continued to rise, so did the need for expansion at the Crowley plant. In 1984, a new facility was built adjacent to the existing one which doubled its manufacturing capacity. This meant more jobs and increased economic growth for Crowley and surrounding areas. Mercury Marine's presence in Crowley brought about significant changes and benefits not only to the local community but also to Texas as a whole. The company contributed greatly towards increasing trade between Texas ports and other parts of the country through their marine products transportation routes. Moreover, Mercury Marine has been an active participant in various charitable initiatives within Crowley such as donations towards education programs, supporting local sports teams, and sponsoring community events. In 2005, after over three decades of successful operations in Crowley; Mercury Marine announced plans to move its outboard engine assembly operations from this location to Fond du Lac – Wisconsin where they have since established global headquarters. However; their boat manufacturing division still operates at full capacity on-site in Crowley today with over 900 employees working across both plants combined. Despite no longer being headquartered there; Mercury Marine has maintained strong ties with Crowley – holding annual employee reunions each year that bring together former workers who helped build this iconic brand during those early days of operation. Today, Mercury Marine continues to be a major player in the marine industry globally thanks in part to its history rooted deeply within communities like Crowley where it all began. The legacy left behind by this company is one that will be remembered fondly by generations of residents who have been positively impacted by its presence throughout these years. In conclusion; while many may associate Wisconsin with being the birthplace of Mercury Marine, it is important to recognize and celebrate the significant role that Crowley, Texas has played in shaping this company's success story. From its humble beginnings as a small plant with only 300 employees, it has grown into a global powerhouse within the marine industry – all thanks to the vision and hard work of those who helped build its foundations in Crowley.

Mercury Marine has a long and rich history in Crowley, Texas dating back to the early 1970s. The company first established its presence in Crowley when it acquired Kiekhaefer Aeromarine, a local boat manufacturer, in 1971. Under the leadership of founder Carl Kiekhaefer, Kiekhaefer Aeromarine had been producing small outboard motors since the late 1940s. However, by the late 1960s, competition from larger companies such as Johnson and Evinrude was becoming increasingly fierce. As a result, Kiekhaefer Aeromarine struggled financially and was eventually forced to file for bankruptcy. This is where Mercury Marine stepped in. Seeing potential in the struggling company's technology and manufacturing capabilities, Mercury Marine purchased Kiekhaefer Aeromarine and renamed it Mercury Outboards Division – Southwest Operations. The acquisition proved to be a smart move for Mercury Marine. With its new facility in Crowley, the company gained access to skilled workers who were already familiar with boat production techniques. This allowed for a smooth transition into manufacturing their own line of boats alongside their popular outboard motors. In addition to expanding its product offerings through acquiring Kiekhaefer Aeromarine's assets, Mercury Marine also invested heavily in modernizing the facilities at its new location. This included upgrading equipment and infrastructure to increase efficiency and productivity. By 1982, just over ten years after establishing itself in Crowley, Mercury Outboards Division – Southwest Operations had grown significantly under Mercury Marine's ownership. The division became one of Crowley’s largest employers with over 700 employees working on-site. Throughout the following decades, Mercury continued to expand its operations in Crowley by investing millions of dollars into facility upgrades and expansions. In addition to being known for high-quality outboard motors used by recreational boaters around the world, Mercury also became recognized as an industry leader in marine technology and innovation. This was demonstrated by the company's development of new products such as the Mercury Verado outboard engine, which set a new standard for performance and reliability. Today, Mercury Marine's Crowley location remains an important part of the company's global operations. The facility covers over 500 acres and employs more than 1,200 employees who work on everything from boat manufacturing to research and development. In addition to being a major employer in Crowley, Mercury Marine also contributes significantly to the local economy through various community initiatives. These include supporting local education programs and sponsoring events that promote boating safety and conservation efforts. With its long-standing history in Crowley, Texas, Mercury Marine has become an integral part of the community and continues to be a driving force in the marine industry. Through constant innovation and dedication to quality craftsmanship, Mercury has solidified itself as a trusted brand among boaters worldwide.

Mercury Marine is a leading manufacturer of marine engines and propulsion systems, with a rich history dating back to 1939. The company has had a significant impact on the boating industry, revolutionizing the way boats are powered and providing reliable products that have become synonymous with quality and performance. The story of Mercury Marine begins in 1939 when Carl Kiekhaefer purchased an outboard motor manufacturing company called Cedarburg Manufacturing Company. The company was producing a two-cylinder engine known as “Thor” at the time, but Kiekhaefer saw potential for improvement. He immediately began working on improvements to the Thor engine, focusing on power and reliability. In 1940, Kiekhaefer’s efforts paid off when he introduced his first product under the name Mercury Marine – an improved version of the Thor outboard motor. This new engine quickly gained popularity among boat owners due to its superior performance and durability compared to other models on the market. As World War II broke out, Mercury Marine shifted its focus from recreational boating to supporting military efforts by supplying motors for small landing craft used by Allied forces. This helped establish Mercury as a trusted brand in both civilian and military sectors. Crowley, Texas is a small city located in Tarrant and Johnson counties, about 15 miles south of Fort Worth. With a population of just over 16,000 people, it may not be the most well-known city in Texas but it has a rich history that dates back to the late 1800s. The land where Crowley now stands was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Caddo and Comanche. However, with the arrival of European settlers in the mid-19th century, this land became part of an area known as Peters Colony which was granted to early pioneers for their service in the Republic of Texas. In 1848, brothers S.H. and W.D. Hulen purchased more than 1,800 acres of land near present-day Crowley from Peter Foscue and began developing it into farmland. The area soon became known as "Hulensville" and attracted families looking for agricultural opportunities. One such family was that of Sidney Smith Crowley who arrived in Hulensville around 1853 with his wife Elizabeth Ann Brown Crowley and their six children. They settled on a large piece of land along Deer Creek (now called Crowley Branch) where they built a house and established themselves as successful farmers. In 1882, when Tarrant County decided to extend its railway line through Hulensville towards Cleburne, local residents petitioned for a new train stop to be built closer to their homes instead of having to travel all the way to Fort Worth or Cleburne for goods and services. As luck would have it, Sidney Smith's son Alonzo Watson Crowley owned land adjacent to the proposed railroad route which made him an ideal candidate for donating some acreage for this purpose. Alonzo agreed to donate ten acres for the train depot on one condition - that he could name it after his father's family who had been living there for nearly 30 years. And so, on July 17th, 1882, the new train stop was officially named "Crowley" and a post office soon followed. The arrival of the railway brought much-needed economic growth to the area as it enabled farmers to transport their crops and livestock more efficiently. Soon, other businesses such as general stores, blacksmith shops, and cotton gins sprang up in Crowley which further boosted its economy. Incorporated in 1951 with Alonzo Watson Crowley serving as its first mayor, this small town continued to thrive over the next few decades. In 1965, Interstate Highway 35W was constructed through Crowley which further spurred development. By the early 1970s, there were several subdivisions being built in the area leading to a population boom. Today Crowley is no longer just an agricultural community but a thriving city that offers residents modern amenities while still maintaining its small-town charm. The railroad depot has been restored and now houses a museum showcasing artifacts from the city's past. The historic downtown district also features charming boutiques and restaurants housed in century-old buildings. One notable event that put Crowley on both national and international maps was when President Ronald Reagan visited in November of 1984 during his re-election campaign tour. He spoke at La Plaza Park where thousands of people gathered to hear him speak. In recent years, Crowley has seen rapid growth with many residential developments popping up along with commercial centers bringing new businesses and jobs into the area. Despite this growth spurt though, the city has managed to hold onto its sense of community spirit thanks to events like annual parades, festivals, and concerts held throughoutthe year. The history of Crowley is not only preserved through its landmarks but also by current residents who are proud of their heritage and work hard to maintain their roots while embracing progress.Their efforts have resulted in making this once sleepy farming town into oneof the fastest-growing cities in Tarrant County. In conclusion, Crowley is a city with a rich and vibrant history that has played an important role in shaping Texas. From its early days as farmland to its current status as a bustling city, it has evolved into a diverse community that continues to attract new residents while honoring its past. As it looks towards the future, one can only imagine what other exciting chapters will be added to the story of Crowley, Texas.

Crowley, Texas has a rich history dating back to the mid-1800s when it was first settled by pioneers and farmers. The city is named after S.H. Crowley, who petitioned for a post office in 1881 and became the town's first postmaster. The land where Crowley now stands was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Comanche, Kiowa, and Wichita. In fact, evidence of early Native American settlements can still be found today in the area. In 1846, Texas officially became part of the United States and settlers began moving into the area looking for new opportunities. One of these early settlers was John Hargrave who purchased over 400 acres of land near present-day Crowley. He established a small farm and soon other families followed suit. As more people began to move into the area, businesses started popping up along what is now Main Street (then known as Cattle Drive). A general store was opened in 1873 followed by a blacksmith shop and cotton gin. This small community continued to grow steadily over time. In 1885, S.H. Crowley arrived in town with his family from Missouri seeking better health conditions for his wife who suffered from asthma. They purchased land on either side of Cattle Drive (now Main Street) which would become their home and farmland. As mentioned before, Mr.Crowley successfully petitioned for a post office which he operated out of his home until an official building could be constructed. With its prime location between Fort Worth and Cleburne along major cattle trails, Crowley thrived as a supply point for cowboys driving herds northward during this time period. By 1892,Crowley had grown enough that it incorporated as an official city with J.B.Davis serving as mayor. The population at this time was around150 residents, and services included two doctors,a bank,a newspaper, and several stores. In the early 1900s, Crowley saw an influx of settlers from Germany and other European countries. Many of these new residents were farmers who introduced new crops such as corn, wheat, and sorghum to the area. They also brought with them their cultural traditions which are still celebrated in Crowley today. The discovery of oil near Fort Worth in the early 1920s had a significant impact on Crowley's economy. Many residents found work in nearby oil fields while others opened businesses to cater to the growing industry. This provided a boost to the local economy and helped spur further growth for the city. Over time, Crowley continued to develop into a thriving community with schools, churches, parks, and recreational facilities being built. In 1951,the city established its own school district separate from neighboring Burleson Independent School District, and by 1965,Crowley had grown enough that it was reclassified as a "Type A General Law City". Today,Crowley is home to over 17,000 residents and has seen significant growth due to its proximity to major highways and easy access to both Fort Worth and Dallas. Despite this growth, the city has managed to maintain its small-town charm while offering modern amenities for its citizens. In conclusion,Crowley,Texas may have started out as a small farming community, but through hard work, determination, and adaptability,it has evolved into a diverse,culturally-rich,and thriving city that continues to attract new residents looking for a place they can call home.
