Mercury Marine is a leading manufacturer of marine propulsion systems, headquartered in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The company has a rich history that dates back to the early 1930s when it was founded by Carl Kiekhaefer. Over the years, Mercury Marine has grown into a global powerhouse with operations in multiple countries and thousands of employees worldwide. One of the key locations for Mercury Marine’s success story is Corinth, Texas. This small city located north of Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex holds a significant place in Mercury Marine’s history. In this paper, we will explore how Corinth became an integral part of Mercury Marine's operations and its contribution to the company's growth. The Beginning In 1961, Carl Kiekhaefer established his first manufacturing plant outside Wisconsin in Oshkosh, Nebraska. However, due to various reasons including labor shortages and high production costs at this location, he decided to move its outboard motor division from Oshkosh to Lake Forest California in 1973. However further changes were on the horizon as Brunswick Corporation acquired the company from Carl Kiekhaefer in 1961. With Brunswick holding control over Mercury Marine now they wanted more control over their product lines which included boat brands such as Bayliner Boats where they were built at facilities across North America but also powered by their own engines produced through proprietary technological advances that had been made throughout nearly two decades since being taken over by Brunswick Corporation. Establishment Of Manufacturing Facility In Corinth Brunswick Corporation bought land along Interstate Highway I-35E near Denton Creek bridge about five miles south-western edge of Lewisville lake just outside village limits (at time) between cities DFW International Airport known then simply Colony,Texas saw potential site for new business park development after completion project began building brand-new facility there called "Mercury Outboards" opened officially June 26th ,2008 dedicated new facility there called "Mercury Marine" grand opening ceremony attended by over 500 employees, state and local government officials, suppliers and other stakeholders. The Corinth plant started as a small operation but soon evolved into a major manufacturing facility for Mercury Marine. The initial investment in the plant was $70 million with the expectation of creating around 450 jobs. However, within two years of its opening, the plant had already doubled its workforce to meet the growing demand for Mercury Marine's products. One of the key reasons behind choosing Corinth as a location for their new plant was its strategic proximity to Denton Creek bridge on Interstate Highway I-35E. This provided easy access to transportation routes allowing efficient distribution of products across North America. Moreover, Corinth has a strong and skilled labor force that made it an ideal location for manufacturing operations. Product Range And Expansion Initially, the Corinth plant focused on producing outboard engines ranging from 40hp to 250hp. However, due to advancements in technology and increasing demand for higher horsepower engines, Mercury Marine expanded its product range at this facility. In 2010, they added production lines for larger outboard engines up to 400hp along with stern drives used in high-performance boats. In addition to expanding their product range at this facility, Mercury Marine also invested in research and development capabilities at Corinth. They established an engineering center where they worked on developing innovative technologies that would improve performance and fuel efficiency of their marine propulsion systems. Contribution To Local Economy And Community Mercury Marine’s presence in Corinth has had a significant impact on the local economy and community since its inception. The company provides well-paying jobs which have helped boost economic growth in the area. Additionally, they have also contributed towards infrastructure improvements such as road expansions near their plants making commuting easier for residents. Moreover, Mercury Marine also actively participates in community initiatives through various philanthropic efforts including donations towards education programs aimed at promoting STEM education, supporting local charities and sponsoring events in the community. In 2018, Mercury Marine announced a major expansion of its Corinth plant with an investment of $10 million. This expansion not only created more job opportunities but also increased production capacity for their products. The company’s continuous growth has made it one of the largest employers in the city of Corinth. Conclusion Mercury Marine’s decision to establish a manufacturing facility in Corinth, Texas has proven to be a smart move. Over the years, this location has played a crucial role in the company's success by providing skilled labor, strategic location for distribution and access to advanced research and development capabilities. Moreover, Mercury Marine's presence has had positive economic impacts on the local community through job creation and investments towards infrastructure improvements. Corinth, Texas is a small but vibrant city located in the northeastern part of Denton County. It is situated about 30 miles north of Dallas and 10 miles south of Denton, making it a convenient location for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of big city life while still being close enough to enjoy its amenities. The history of Corinth dates back to the mid-1800s when settlers began arriving in the area. The town was originally named "Empire" due to its promising potential as a center for trade and commerce. However, it wasn't until 1880 that the name was changed to Corinth after an ancient Greek city known for its prosperity. One notable figure in Corinth's early history was William Lewis Peters, who purchased land in 1854 and became one of the first settlers in what would become Corinth. He built a gristmill on Hickory Creek which provided grain grinding services to neighboring communities. In 1876, Peters donated land for a schoolhouse, church, cemetery, and public square which became known as "Peters Colony." This helped attract more settlers to the area and by 1881 there were around twenty families living in what is now modern-day Corinth. The arrival of railroads played a significant role in shaping Corinth's growth as they allowed for easier transportation of goods and people. In 1905, construction began on what would later become known as the Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT) railroad line through Denton County. This led to increased economic opportunities for local farmers who could now transport their crops more efficiently. As with many towns across America during this time period, agriculture drove much of Corinth's economy. Cotton was one particularly important crop that brought prosperity to local farmers. By World War I era cotton farming had become so profitable that it attracted wealthy investors from other states like Oklahoma and Kansas further boosting economic growth. However, in the 1920s, a boll weevil infestation devastated the cotton industry in Corinth and forced farmers to diversify their crops. Many turned to dairy farming, which became a significant source of income for the town. The Great Depression hit Corinth hard, as it did many small towns across America. The population dwindled and businesses struggled to stay afloat. But with the onset of World War II, things began to turn around for Corinth. A military base was built nearby in Denton bringing an influx of people and jobs to the area. In 1956, Highway Interstate 35 was constructed through Corinth further connecting it to larger cities like Dallas and Fort Worth. This brought more commercial development and helped spur growth in residential areas. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, Corinth continued its steady growth as new housing developments were built and more businesses opened up shop. In 1960, the city officially incorporated with a population of just over 400 residents. Today, Corinth is home to over 21,000 residents who enjoy its suburban feel while still being close enough for easy access to major cities. Its economy is diverse with industries such as healthcare services, education facilities including North Central Texas College's satellite campus located within city limits , retail stores , restaurants , banking institutions , entertainment venues all contributing towards its economic stability . One notable attraction in modern-day Corinth is Lake Lewisville which offers recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and camping . It also has several parks and trails for outdoor enthusiasts. Corinth prides itself on maintaining a strong sense of community through various events throughout the year including an annual Fourth of July celebration at one of its largest parks - Meadowview Park . The city also hosts farmer's markets where local vendors sell fresh produce every week during peak growing seasons . Education has always been an important aspect in Corinth's history with schools being established early on by William Lewis Peters himself . Today, the city is served by two highly rated school districts - Lake Dallas Independent School District and Denton Independent School District. There are also various private schools in the area providing residents with a range of options for their children's education. In recent years, Corinth has seen significant development and growth with new housing developments, commercial buildings, and infrastructure projects. The city continues to attract families and businesses alike due to its small-town charm and convenient location. In conclusion, Corinth may have had humble beginnings as a small farming community but it has evolved into a thriving city with a rich history. From its early days as "Peters Colony" to becoming an incorporated city in 1960, Corinth has weathered many challenges while maintaining its sense of community and identity. Today, it stands as a testament to resilience and progress while still holding on to its roots.

History: The story of Mercury Marine began when E. Carl Kiekhaefer purchased a bankrupt engine manufacturing company called Thor-Craft in 1939. He renamed it “Kiekhaefer Corporation” and moved it from Cedarburg to his hometown of Fond du Lac in Wisconsin. Initially producing outboard motors for commercial use such as fishing boats and patrol boats during World War II, Kiekhaefer soon recognized that there was also a demand for recreational outboards. In 1946, he introduced his first consumer product – the Thunderbolt Four-cylinder Outboard – which became an instant success. Innovation & Growth: Mercury Marine’s early success can be attributed to their innovative designs and engineering techniques that set them apart from their competitors. Under Kiekhaefer's leadership, they developed lightweight aluminum castings for outboard motors which were more durable than traditional steel castings used at that time. Their continuous innovation led them to introduce several groundbreaking technologies including electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems for marine engines in 1982; this technology revolutionized boat performance and efficiency while reducing emissions significantly. Another milestone achievement came with the introduction of Verado™ four-stroke outboards in 2004 - these supercharged engines provided superior performance compared to two-stroke models while maintaining environmental compliance standards set by government agencies around the world. Acquisitions & Expansion: Over time Mercury Marine expanded its portfolio through strategic acquisitions. In 1961, they acquired Michigan-based Quicksilver Propellers, the world's largest manufacturer of marine propellers at that time. In 2005, Mercury Marine was acquired by Brunswick Corporation, a leading global manufacturer in recreational products such as boats and fitness equipment. This acquisition provided Mercury Marine with significant resources for research and development and allowed them to expand their production capabilities globally. Current Operations: Today, Mercury Marine operates out of multiple facilities worldwide producing a wide range of products including outboard motors, sterndrives (inboard/outboard engines), parts & accessories for boats and propulsion systems for commercial use. Their headquarters in Fond du Lac employs over 3,000 people while their other manufacturing facilities are located across the United States – including Oklahoma City, Stillwater and Tulsa - as well as around the world in countries such as China, Mexico and Belgium. They also have distribution centers in Australia and New Zealand to cater to customers in those regions. Product Offerings: Mercury Marine offers an extensive range of marine engine models designed for different types of boats - from high-performance speedboats to fishing vessels. The majority of their product line is focused on four-stroke engines due to increasing environmental concerns surrounding two-stroke engines which emit more pollutants into water bodies. Apart from traditional outboards ranging from 2 horsepower up to 400 horsepower; Mercury Marine also produces Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) enabled Jet Outboards designed specifically for shallow water operation along with Diesel Sterndrives targeted towards commercial applications. Future Outlook: With increased government regulations regarding emissions standards being enforced globally; the future outlook for companies like Mercury Marine seems promising given their emphasis on developing eco-friendly technologies. They continue investing millions each year into research & development efforts aimed at improving efficiency while reducing carbon footprint through better engine designs. Mercury has also been actively involved in promoting boating safety through various initiatives including partnerships with organizations such as Sea Tow Foundation and the National Safe Boating Council. In addition, they have been expanding their digital capabilities to improve customer experience and access points for product information globally. In conclusion, Mercury Marine’s rich history of innovation and growth has made them a leader in the marine industry. Their commitment towards developing environmentally friendly products while maintaining high performance standards has enabled them to stay ahead of competition and establish a global presence. With continued investment in research & development, strategic acquisitions, and focus on promoting boating safety; it is safe to say that Mercury Marine will continue to be a key player in the boating industry for years to come.
